In 1469, during the Turkish invasion, the Turks kidnapped about 500 children in Vinica. One of the invasion routes passed through this area, so the inhabitants built temporary walls around the churches to protect themselves. The legend tells of one of these attacks, when the Turks were preparing to besiege Žeželj, where the inhabitants of Vinica had taken refuge.
People decided on a special procession and lit all the candles they had available. They left through one door of the church and returned to Mary through the other. These actions left a decisive impression on the Turks, who wrongly concluded that a siege by the inhabitants was much stronger than an attack by themselves. Due to these tricks, the Turks abandoned the attack, and according to this legend, the Venetians were miraculously saved.
